What is botulinum toxin treatment?

Botulinum toxin temporarily inhibits signals from nerves to muscles. We assess recurrent expression lines and muscle movement to determine treatment direction. WayB considers the properties of BOTOX, XEOMIN and HITOX alongside your previous responses.

Which concerns do you assess?

We first assess whether expression lines predominate or muscle size or tension affects your contours. Wrinkles caused by sagging or hollowness have different causes, so we also assess whether volume or firming treatment is needed.

Skin Botox delivers small amounts into superficial skin layers for pores, fine lines and texture. Its sites, depths and goals differ from expression-muscle treatment, so we distinguish the approaches.

How do BOTOX, XEOMIN and HITOX differ?

ProductManufacturerUnderstanding product features
BOTOXAllergan Aesthetics · AbbVieA botulinum toxin type A product with a long history and extensive clinical research
XEOMINMerzA botulinum toxin type A formulation emphasizing removal of complexing proteins
HITOXKorea BMIA botulinum toxin type A product produced in Jeju from bulk solution to finished product using vacuum drying

Manufacturing and formulations differ. Selection considers the actual product, area and previous response. No product is assumed to last longer for everyone or to eliminate resistance.

What is Allergan BOTOX?

BOTOX is Allergan Aesthetics/AbbVie's botulinum toxin type A medication brand. Unlike the everyday term “botox” for the procedure generally, Allergan BOTOX refers to a specific product. It is used to soften recurrent expression lines and has a long history of use and extensive clinical research.

Features emphasized by the manufacturer

An original brand with a long history

BOTOX first received US FDA approval for therapeutic use in 1989, followed by BOTOX Cosmetic approval for glabellar lines in 2002. Its experience expanded from therapeutic to aesthetic use, making it an option to explore if brand history and clinical experience matter to you. (Brand history)

Clinical research and experience accumulated over time

Research on efficacy and safety has continued across aesthetic and therapeutic fields. Longstanding evidence helps clinicians understand expected changes and reactions to watch for. WayB considers this evidence and individual expression-muscle movement to balance wrinkle reduction with natural expression.

What is XEOMIN?

XEOMIN is Merz's botulinum toxin type A medication. It softens wrinkles by reducing recurrent expression-muscle contractions. Its manufacturing removes proteins surrounding the toxin, making it an option for those considering purification and repeat treatments.

Features emphasized by the manufacturer

Purification to remove complexing proteins

XEOMIN uses XTRACT purification to separate complexing proteins from botulinum toxin type A. This distinguishes and purifies the neurotoxin acting on muscle from surrounding proteins. Removing complexing proteins does not mean the product contains no protein or additives. (Purification technology)

Formulation considered for repeat treatment

The manufacturer highlights removal of complexing proteins as a key feature for repeat treatment. Regular patients may consider this alongside previous products, intervals and responses. XEOMIN does not eliminate resistance risk, so WayB also adjusts dose and intervals.

What is HITOX?

HITOX is a botulinum toxin type A medication developed by Korea BMI and produced in Jeju from bulk solution to finished product. It temporarily inhibits nerve-to-muscle signals and is used according to muscle movement and treatment goals. It features vacuum drying and quality control throughout domestic manufacturing.

Features emphasized by the manufacturer

Vacuum drying designed for protein stability

HITOX is made using vacuum drying, which lowers pressure to remove moisture. This process considers the protein nature of botulinum toxin to reduce denaturation and maintain stability during manufacturing. The manufacturer highlights this drying method and control of manufacturing conditions.

Quality control from bulk solution to finished product

The Jeju facility handles culture, purification and finished-product manufacturing, with tests such as bulk purity testing for quality control. Processes and quality procedures are validated for consistent quality from development through production. WayB considers these manufacturing features and previous responses to plan HITOX for wrinkle locations and muscle movement. (Manufacturer's product information)

Can resistance develop?

The likelihood of botulinum toxin resistance varies with product, dose, intervals and treatment history. Using the medically appropriate dose and avoiding unnecessarily short intervals may help reduce the likelihood of neutralizing antibody formation.

Reduced effect does not always mean antibody-related resistance. We assess the previous product, dose, injection sites and muscle condition to plan the next treatment.

How are treatment and follow-up planned?

We review previous products, treatment dates, effects and uncomfortable reactions. We assess wrinkles and muscle movement to plan sites and doses, then check changes to determine the next treatment timing. Onset and duration vary by product and area.

Recovery & Precautions

Redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness or headache may occur. Effects on nearby muscles can cause temporary drooping eyelids, altered expressions, asymmetry or muscle weakness. Tell the clinic about unexpected movement or discomfort.

Seek emergency care immediately for difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking, or severe generalized weakness. Before treatment, disclose pregnancy or breastfeeding, neuromuscular conditions, ingredient allergies and medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can resistance develop to XEOMIN?

Although complexing proteins are removed, no guarantee can be made that resistance will never occur. Antibodies to botulinum toxin can form. Reduced effect may also relate to dose, injection site or muscle condition. Reviewing previous products, timing and responses is advisable.

Does it work equally on all wrinkles?

It is used to soften wrinkles related to expression-muscle movement. Wrinkles caused by sagging or deep creasing may not improve sufficiently by reducing muscle movement alone, so other treatments may be considered according to the cause.

How is Allergan BOTOX different from the general term botox?

People often call botulinum toxin procedures “botox,” but BOTOX is a specific Allergan Aesthetics/AbbVie brand. It has a long history of use and clinical research in aesthetics and therapeutics. WayB considers its properties and your previous responses when selecting it.

What are HITOX's features?

HITOX is Korea BMI's botulinum toxin type A, produced in Jeju from bulk solution to finished product. It features vacuum drying for protein stability and quality control throughout production. We assess goals, muscle movement and previous responses to plan sites and dose.

Will switching products resolve resistance?

The cause of reduced effect must be assessed first. Along with product choice, we review dose, injection sites, intervals, muscle condition and previous responses to plan further treatment.
